This is Minji, a character who I’ve had for like 7 years or something but even throughout all that time, I never really bothered to develop her story… Like the millions of OCs I have created in my life but never bothered to develop/showcase online…

Minji was a result of my 12 year old self wanting an action/adventure/shonen/heavily-Naruto-inspired story but with a female protag and set in feudal Korea (because I thought there were too many feudal Japan stories). Her nickname’s ‘shithead’ because she gets teased by all the other Korean girls for having brown hair + she’s not good at cooking/cleaning/housewifery in general; so as a result Minji became this tomboy because she never liked doing chores anyway and she helps her dad farm their crops or something. I made her go travelling around Asia at some point and meet with this multicultural secret village that wants harmony but I’m not entirely sure why I did that… so I’m scrapping that idea (I have scrapped many ideas when it has come to this character)

Also she has a best friend - his name is Hyesong and he is pretty much a dog in human form (in terms of personality). Hyesong also happens to be the person responsible for accidentally killing Minji with a wooden sword during a contest… My 12 year old self thought it would be an awesome idea to make a main character die just because no one else has done it…

Yeah I just end up hating everything that I make even though I shouldn’t be… WHY…

Foreward The Q and A people told me that I could only ask one question, so I chose a random one from the replies in my haste (will-of-asherah) but Asuka’s VA didn’t really understand your question so sorry if her answer was a bit unsatisfactory;;;;

This is a ~~really rough and grammatically unpolished~~ summary of what she answered. I didn’t get to write down the whole thing cause I haven’t seen any new blog posts from Geek of Oz with a script of the whole interview.

Q) Did you expect Evangelion to become such a phenomenon

A) At first I thought it would be just your normal robot anime, but mid-season it became deeper and more psychological - during that time 20 years ago, I was thinking to myself, “Can we air this?? This isn’t a normal robot show!!”

Q) How did you get into the voice acting industry?

A) I majored in theatre drama in university and I was a theatre drama actress for some time. However, you don’t get paid very well in theatre, so many actors take voice acting as a secondary job, either in dubbing manga or anime or voiceover-ing foreign films. While I was studying drama, I realised my voice goes well with children, so I would often take up little girls’/little boys’ roles in the theatre so I guess that contributed to how I ended up in voice acting. Also personally, I love manga and anime so I was really keen on working in an environment that lets me interact with manga and anime!

Q) Do you have any advice for people who want to go into the Japanese voice acting industry?

A) It might seem pretty obvious, but study the Japanese language, and learn Japanese culture! Most anime is set in Japan, so if you apply your knowledge of Japanese culture to your voice acting, your acting will have a lot of depth to it.

Q) Let’s talk about sub vs dub…. Many fans have debated whether subtitles or dubbing preserve the nuances of Japanese language which is lost through English translation. What is your stance on this argument?

That is a very good question to be honest! Personally though, I’ve felt that reading English subtitles while listening to Japanese voices is somewhat lacking? Because you only have a certain amount of space and time to convey as many words and concepts as you can. I guess what’s important is the feeling you’re left with after you watch anime though - my daughter watches anime in both Japanese and English dub but somehow she doesn’t remember which language she actually watched the show on.

Q) How do you audition for roles even when you’re living in Melbourne?

Actually, when I want to audition for roles, I fly to Japan, and when I go to work I fly to Japan. I only have two jobs now that I have children to take care of - in Evangelion, as you all know, as well as Detective Conan.

Q) Why do you think the Evangelion franchise is so enduring even after its airing 20 years ago?

Well, one thing is that Evangelion had battle scenes with fighting the angels, explosions, sfx, etc. so that was pretty cool - but another thing is that Evangelion didn’t actually have an ending - so that made people feel really weird! It actually inspired people to make their own endings, to spread their own endings across the internet, and that became such a phenomenon.

Q) What is Hideaki Anno like?

*TREMENDOUS LAUGHTER*

He is an otaku! He is one of Japan’s top 4 otakus! He’s really intelligent but he’s so persistent and pragmatic - he won’t stop until he gets what he wants! I remember doing 20-30 or so retakes for various scenes and I would always think, “What is he thinking? What does he want from me?”

For example in Death and Rebirth, in the scene where Shinji strangles Asuka, I had to make Asuka’s strangling breath noise but for that I had to do thousands of retakes, and Anno wasn’t satisfied with any of them! Megumi Ogata, Shinji’s voice actor had an idea though so she said to me “Miyamu (Miyamura’s nickname) lie down for a bit.” so I did.

Then Ogata got on top of me and started strangling me! Anno was recording me at the time and when he played it back, he thought it was perfect! So Asuka’s strangled breathing in Death and Rebirth is a genuine sound of me being strangled!

Q) What does Evangelion mean to you?

I am absolutely estatic to be a part of the Evangelion anime! It’s become such a world wide phenomenon, and it’s lessened the distance between foreign fans and Japanese fans in enjoying the anime that they love! If being a part of Evangelion means to bring Japanese culture and foreign cultures as one, I’m really happy to be part of this movement!

Q) What does Asuka mean to you?

A) She’s like a daughter to me - ever since the TV series began 20 years ago.

Q) Why does Asuka say ‘kimochi warui (how disgusting)’ in the End of Evangelion movie in the scene where Shinji strangles Asuka?

To be honest, that phrase wasn’t very special at all; during the production of the Evangelion TV series, and the movies, and even now in the Rebuild movies, the script changed (and still changes) so many times that it’s not funny! Anno will ask us voice actors a lot of different questions from different scenes and change the script according to what the actors’ responses are.

So when Anno asked me during End of Evangelion’s production “When you wake up and see a man masturbating over your body, what is the first thought that crosses your mind?”, I answered “How disgusting” - because imagine it: a man coming into your room at night; you’re half asleep but you’re thinking “Am I going to get assaulted? Am I going to get killed?” but instead the man just takes off his pants and starts jacking off to you instead! Wouldn’t you be thinking “How disgusting” as well?

So with my response, Anno changed the script accordingly.

Q) As a voice actor, what do you think of Anno’s casting as the main character in the upcoming Ghibli movie Kaze Tachinu?

It’s my first time hearing about this actually! Well, it doesn’t matter what your voice is like as long as it fits the character, however, I hope he goes through a lot of trouble, and go through many, many retakes, and agonise himself in the process thinking, “What does the director want from me?” Just like I did when I was working for him!

Q) Do you happen to be familar with any changes that happened during 3.0’s production? Involving Asuka or otherwise.

I can’t tell you many details because Q hasn’t been aired in Australia yet, so sorry! The script changes all the time, but no drastic changes were made to Asuka’s character. In terms of the Rebuild movies themselves, Evangelion Q was supposed to be the final Rebuild movie but then Anno and the directors just thought to themselves, “The ending just doesn’t fit 3 movies… we’ll make a 4th movie!”
